get wrapped up in ditching class, trying to find time to sleep,
agonizing over the 5 game losing streak [that was just snapped
tonight], being lazy overall and this is what happens:

Re-Defining “Performance Enhancing Drugs”:

Talk about insane timing. I was considering just reusing my last ‘roid post title “Baseball Is A Dirty Rag That Just Can’t Enough” for this new bombshell, but I realized that just didn’t do the job for me after reading this:

two sources said the substance Ramirez tested positive for was a
gonadotropin. Major League Baseball’s list of banned substances
includes the gonadotropins LH and HCG, which are most commonly used by
women as fertility drugs. They also can be used to trigger testosterone
production. Testosterone is depleted by steroid use, and low
testosterone can cause erectile dysfunction.

and similar drugs are effective for erectile dysfunction in that they
jazz up your sex drive,” said Charles Yesalis, a professor at Penn
State University who has testified before Congress on issues of
performance-enhancing drugs. “But far more clinicians accept that
affect with Viagra and Cialis. It’s hard for me to understand if it was
erectile dysfunction why they would use it.”

physician with experience in international drug-testing said LH and HCG
are occasionally prescribed for men “whose testicles have basically
stopped functioning.”

– “Ramirez’s Drug Used To Stimulate Testosterone

what Manny tested positive for wasn’t exactly a steroid or human growth
hormone, it is said that “HCG is used to re-stimulate the testicles,
primarily in men with a history of steroid use”.. But if the fact that
Manny’s “performance”/testicular problems is now plastered everywhere doesn’t give you a good laugh, you need a sense of humor.

But, in all seriousness, HFS. [Hey friggin soos.] This game will never be rid of this. Never.
Take a game that encompasses picking statistics down to the bone, toss
in a fistful of tainted numbers and some tablespoons of doubt, stir exhaustively and
I guarantee you will no longer know what you’re eating / being stuffed down your throat.

The Return Of That Dude At Third Base:

talk about insane timing.. and not just on that first swing tonight.
The day after the Manny news is released and is handed a 50 game
suspension and hell of a fine, A-Rod plays his first game of the
season, after spending April and the first week of May on the DL
following some steroid news of his own over the offseason. So how does
it enfold?

First pitch.. first swing.. first homer.

return of a-rod 1.jpg

Gods can be pretty big a-holes some times, but they kind of know how to
script these things. A tad optimistic here, but would be too much to
ask for this beginning to lead to a storybook ending? [Yeah, I know..]

Paid Vacations In Abundance:

Oh how pinstriped boys love the DL…

disabled list.jpg

let me get this straight.. even the backup guys aren’t safe? Cervelli
better have some magic in him.. though I think we’d all no choice but
to settle for a decent job behind the plate and whatever he manages to accomplish in the batters box.

Other Shizz:

– Double half a squiggly
was A-mazing in this win. Reason why the opposition was held scoreless
in this one: the bullpen never got a chance to screw it up. Thought a
tweet by HTBP was pretty funny:
“We usually say the game is over when Mo comes in, now we can say the
same thing of our bullpen.” However, judging by the two long balls he
served up the other night and the fact that Joe G. is admiting he’s
having arm strength issues.. maybe no one can be a guarantee on this team’s ugly pen.

– Speaking of those back-to-back smacks off Mo.. does Joe G. have a set of functioning balls on him or what? Pulling out the Sandman in the middle of the 9th? Haven’t seen that since… time out, has that ever happened?

Uh.. I don’t even remember what else I wanted to say, but I refuse to
reflect much on those 5 knife stabbing losses before tonight, so I will
just say that let’s forget the problems and get moving in the right
direction [and avoid the bullpen at all costs].

On Deck: Hughes taking the mound to face Adam Eaton at 7:05 looking deliver an additional stellar outing to keep things on track.

Swish is still awesome. Really cheered for that ejection the other day.
The umpiring the entire homestand was ridiculous and someone needed to
curse one of those umps out. I would’ve did it myself when I went to
the Boskees game on Tuesday but my ejection wouldn’t have be so awesome
and would’ve been a total waste of a ticket.. so I winded up settling
for just yelling really loud, losing my voice, sticking it out through
the rain, developing a sore throat and being an hour and a half late to
school the next day instead.

I will likely deny this later, but I may have a slight new found respect for
Pap.. yeah, the Jonathan Papelbon.. though solely because of his response to the
Manny news in this interview:

Props.. However, I will continue to loathe him full force on the field.

Taking It All In

The Press Conference:

because this involved Alex Rodriguez, a lot has already been said about
this one.. and naturally, because this involved Alex Rodriguez, a hell
of a lot more negative things have been put out there than positive..
which shouldn’t surprise anyone. However, I think this time it was
possibly taken to a whole new level.

a-rod fans.jpg

has been the front and back page story more times than I can count, but
yesterday was probably the first time I felt as if many had their
articles written before A-Rod even said a word. Granted, it was pretty
much inconceivable to think that whatever A-Rod had to say or whatever
answers he gave was going to be powerful enough to take the stench
created by this latest ‘roid news away, but a lot of times power comes
not only from what is said.. and yesterday, for some reason, along with
some things I too found unpleasant, I also saw some things I
felt were commendable. For one, it was evident that Alex attempted to
prepare as best he could, as pretty much everyone knows he’s not a
great public speaker to say the least, realized that he did
this to himself and had to deal with it, was honestly sorry for it and
was probably more vulnerable than at least I’ve ever seen him. However, with that said, I know that the news of Alex’s use of steroids was a stab in the heart and
back to many, but I’ll let everyone else spend years criticizing him.
For the most part I pretty much take the stance that if it is not who you are now,
I don’t care.. and because A-Rod has not failed a drug test since ’03
[obviously not needing ‘roids to play at the level he has] and can’t
change the past even if he wanted to, I don’t see a reason to continue
picking this apart [his credibility/character may be a different story]. Judgement Day will still come for him 14 or so
years from now whether he likes it or not.

One more thing though…

Rodriguez said he knew that what he was taking wasn’t Tic Tacs…

primabolan tic tacs.jpg

but ehhhh, I don’t know… they look pretty much the same to me.

El Capitan’s Response:

Jeet had not said much about the situation since the story broke out,
when he spoke to reporters yesterday, I think all that came from his
mouth was pretty much expected. Unsurprisingly, he stated that he and
the team would be behind him, supporting him even though they do not
condone what he did, that Alex admitted to his mistake and now it’s
time to move on. However, probably the only thing really worth noting
is Jeet’s defense of the game, assuring all that not everyone
was taking at the time. I do wish many more people would realize this
and not state that ‘well, everyone was doing it so it really shouldn’t
be a surprise’ or something like that, because though many were, much
more weren’t and shouldn’t be put in the same boat.

The Death Of A Ballpark:

Yes, Shea’s demolition is done…

shea demolition.jpg

Ding dong, the witch is dead!

Sorry, just had to say that.

Manny Still On The Market?:

This guy does know that spring training is literally days away right? Hmm… should we start a pool?

Mark Teixeira:

Does the boy look good in Yankee blue or what?

Then again.. who doesn’t?

[Besides maybe Sal Fasano.. but we will not speak of that..]

In Retrospect

off, I hope everyone had a good time over the holidays, even though I
didn’t [half of  my 12 day vacation from school was a big bummer].  I may be a little late but Happy New Year and all that good
stuff. Back to business. The recap of recent activity:

1. Tex Dons The Pinstripes… After Asking The Missus First

guy that Red Sox hoped they’d get to draw some attention back to them
and the Yanks got by saying “Name your price… okay, done deal” put
the pinstripes on for the first time Tuesday, and though it goes
without saying, looked pretty damn good. The story on every back page
in New York, however, was all about his wife and how Tex needed to have
her say-so to become a Yankee. I admit I got a little chuckle out of
that, but I gotta say, Mark’s no fool. He doesn’t care that his
manlihood is being joked about for a reason. She wears the pants, but
he still brings home the bacon mountain load of bacon.

tex intro-1.jpg

2. Cleveland Becomes The First Team To Come Dangerously Close To Becoming Clinically Insane

Okay, I
knew some team would dare to sign him, but still, I can’t imagine how Pavano, the guy who is literally the definition of injury prone [look it up, I kid you not], is worth more than a penny… not even a shiny one at that.
Yeah, he came back and managed to finish ’08 without stubbing his toe,
but nonetheless… you know that if there is a God, he
has one hell of a sense of humor when Americans who work hard every day
get laid off, while a guy who sat on his *** for half the time he was
in pinstripes is offered $1.5 million easily… and to top it
off though is that fact that even if the worst should happen to him and
he could no longer pitch, he still could easily earn cash advertising for ACE bandages, or possibly even create a new line of designer crutches… who

3. Pettitte Does What I Thought Was Impossible

He said no… to [lotto guy voice] 10 millll-ion dollars… from the Yankees. You what the Yanks said back? “Okay, but when you change your mind… because you will change
your mind… it won’t be $10 million on the table anymore bud.” Putting
jokes aside though, am I the only one who just hates the business side
of baseball? Pettitte wants to be a Yankee and the Yankees want
Pettitte to be a Yankee. You’d think that’d be the easiet contract the
Yanks sign in the off-season, but noooo…

4. Number Of Teams Interested In Former Bo-Sock: Not Manny

didn’t get a check in his stocking and I’m guessing, with Manny being
Manny, he’s pretty peeved… nahhhh, does anyone really believe he
cares about anything? Still, it’s January, and the big boy still hasn’t
got a new uniform. I’d be seriously embarrassed if I were him right
about now. I mean, Pavano got a contract before him. I mean, that’s
just sad.

Side Notes:

– I can’t say G-G-G-G-G-G-Giambino [the G-Unit pronunciation] anymore, booooo.

Bernie gets hit with an injury after joining a Puerto Rican winter ball
team, putting the brakes on his comeback. Though I don’t neccesarily
want to see him in the outfield for the Yanks ever again [no offense
Bern] I would’ve loved to still see him back in the game.

Real Life Monopoly

Okay, now I’ve ‘gotta admit… sometimes I even think it’s unfair.

But hey… it is the Yankees, would you expect anything different?

Now, if you haven’t already heard of the news that has rocked the baseball world today
then you must live under a rock, but nonetheless I’ll reiterate it here
for no other reason than because it sounds that good: Mark Teixeira will be a New York Yankee… Although some prophesied this move beforehand, I, on the other hand, did not think this was going to happen, but apparently there is no limit
whatsoever to the amount of money the execs will spend this Tex-Mas. However, now that it’s being reported that the
Yanks sealed the deal [with 180 million dollars], what does this deal
mean? The way I see it [something I should never say, as the way I see
things isn’t always so normal] is that this means:

1. I will now have to learn how to spell the guy’s name without looking it up anymore.

The Yanks will not be going after Manny Ramirez… unless they are
seriously out of their minds and/or enjoy getting people angry with
their flagrant displays of their wealth, while people are losing their
homes, losing their jobs or having a hard time finding one [namely,
me], or worse… and knowing Hank, that enjoyment is a definite

3. According to Peter Abraham,
this move could mean we won’t be seeing the return of Pettitte, with it
not leaving much room for Andy, unless the Yanks can trade one of their
extra hitters… which just blows. It may be just me but I’d rather
have Old Reliable.

4. I’m going to have to figure out a more unique nickname for Mark than the widely used “Tex”/”Teix”… I’ll get back to you guys on this one.

5. People are going to hate a lot more
than usual [yeah, that’s still possible] if the Yanks make it to the
postseason or farther in ’09. [Note: I use the word “if” only because
the confidence people

mistake for cockiness attribute that Yankee fans possess has got us into
trouble in the past… and of course by “past” I mean the past 8 years.]

6. I honestly don’t know what else this means but I felt like there should be more than 5 reasons this move is big news…

P.S. I would like to thank Jane for writing one of the best articles on being a Yankee fan I’ve possibly ever read… All I can say after reading it is amen.

Welcome Boys. . .

Wearing that interlocking NY logo feels good doesn’t it?

‘Cuz it sure as hell looks good.

now that the papers are signed and these pups have had a chance to
sniff around the house a bit, it’s time to get back to business and ask
the big questions still on mind of Yankee fans […or just me]:

Will Manny ever cease to be a topic of discussion during the off-season
or near the trade deadline? Seriously, let me know if that’s possible.

Will Boston give up their attempts to make bigger signings than us
already? Even if we throw aside the whole debate about which team is
better, it’s pure fact that our bank account is bigger and players,
whether they admit it or not, all want to be Yankees.

3. Will the Yanks empty said bank account? With all this talk surrounding Manny and Teixeira [doubt either will be in NY anytime soon but w/e] I’m wondering if the Yankees have ever heard of a budget.. or the phrase “insufficient funds” for that matter. Then again, it must be pure joy to be able to sign checks with that many zeros on them.

Will the lineup have more than one guy under the age of 30 on Opening Day?
I’m not sure, but this veteran situation seems oddly familiar… guess
that whole youth movement died, and I’m thinking it’ll be buried if
Leche gets shipped off.

And last, and most importantly…

5. Will CC wear a uniform that fits him? CC: You’re young, but not that young. The baggy look can barely be pulled off by teenage boys.

Wheeeel Of Fortuuune

“Uhh.. C!” – “Yes, two C’s on the board.”

“I would like to buy a vowel. A!” – “You got it.”

“I’ll spin again… J!” – “And we have a J. Would you like to solve the puzzle?”

wheel of fortune-1.jpg

Nahhhhh, not yet. This game is fun. Hehe.”

so the shopping spree continues. Though this news was already
anticipated, the Yanks have indeed sealed the 82.5 million dollar 5
year deal with that other pitcher referred to by primarily his first
two initials, A.J. Burnett. However, despite throwing $240 million at
the two newly acquired arms, the game is far from over. With rumors of
the Yanks possibly aiming for another arm, with Andy’s future in
pinstripes uncertain, and of Mike Cameron possibly playing in NYC, the
roster is still in for some changes.

the fact that I know, all too well, that a team on paper means nothing,
I’m still salivating at the sight of this:  Wang, CC, Joba, A.J.,
Pettitte/??… How many days until Opening Day again?

Side Notes:

Believe it or not, a team actually signed Wilson Betemit. Which one you
ask? The only one led by a crazy s.o.b. Ahh, yes, those White Sox. One
piece of info: you know that thing players swing with? Yeah, Betemit
isn’t so good with that. Good luck 🙂

About those rumors of a Manny in New York, I’m thinking that really
won’t happen, but if by some miracle it does.. prepare to witness a

Attempt At Another In-Gamer – Pettitte vs. Garland 7:05

The Yanks will go toe to toe against the Angels tonight in the beginning of a four game set in the Bronx. Andy Pettitte will be on the mound to start the series off for the Yanks. Jon Garland will go for the Angels. I’ll be attempting another in-gamer tonight before I head out for the weekend, though I don’t know if it’ll work out b/c apparently MLBlogs is having server issues [though I just commented on someone’s blog with no problems so we’ll see…] Either way, I’ll be giving updates, and if people are able to comment then fire away. Any and every one is welcome.

Game Time: 7:05

                                      ph_120485.jpg                                                    ph_279782.jpg
Updates To Come:

5:16: Manny actually gets traded. Manny will now be a member of the Dodgers… how weird does that sound. I wonder if he’d dare to pull any of the antics with Joe Torre as his manager now. Hmm…

5:24: The lineup has changed a lot during the season this year, but it has never looked like this:
     Damon DH
     Jeter SS
Abreu RF
A. Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Nady LF
I. Rodriguez C
     Cabrera CF

This has been one hell of a trade season.

6:47: Edwar Ramirez was served with a 3 game suspension for the throw way over Millar’s head yesterday. He’s already filed for an appeal. Daniel Cabrera also got suspended for 6 games for hitting A-Rod on Tuesday. It’s just me but, I don’t think either of those pitches were intentional, though the Cabrera one was a little iffy. Either way, it was not that serious. The suspensions are uncalled for.

7:10: Pudge is wearing #12. The guy looks good in a Yankee uniform.

7:15: According to Kay, Victor Zambrano has been signed to a minor league contract with the Yanks.

7:18: Pettitte and Ivan seemed to be having a little trouble, but Andy works out of the inning throwing 24 pitches.

7:34: Anderson gets picked off at second. Not a smart move on his part.

7:40: Andy gets out of another pressing inning. Pitch count: 43. I hope he and Ivan can get on the same page tonight.

7:43: Paul O’Neill should broadcast more often. Love him.

7:49: The Yanks are hitless through two. It’s too soon to tell but it’s almost like clockwork that the Yanks show little offense following a blowout… hope that’s not the same case tonight.

8:00: Damn it. I hate the Angels. Score 3 – 0.

8:04: &@%#! 6 – 0. I don’t think it’s too early to call game over right about now.

8:11: Pudge goes down swinging in his first at bat as a Yankee. The crowd cheered when he was announced, then booed faintly when he struck out… kind of hilarious.

8:26: Pettitte is not having the kind of outing I hoped for. He’s at 83 pitches threw four and the Yanks are down by 6.

8:33: Bobby does it again. Homer! His tag team buddy A-Rod, follows him with a double drilled into left center.

8:46: Yanks only able to score one. Let’s see if Pettitte can hold it here.

8:49: And Andy works a 1-2-3. Let’s see if we can get some more offense.

8:58: A triple by Melky and a base hit by JD to drive him in. 6 – 2.

9:01: The Yanks only get one run again, but I’ll take it.

9:12: Andy gets pulled after going 6.1 allowing 9 runs… not a good night.

9:20: Okay… now it’s game over. Damn. Imagine what Pudge is thinking: I come to New York just to get bombed my first game? Score: 10 – 2.

9:30: And Cano can’t stop a ball from going past him for his life right now.

9:46: August starts tomorrow. When are we getting that instant replay that we were promised? These umpires are unbelievable. You’ve got to be kidding me. A 4 year old would’ve got that call right. It’s still a blowout, but the Yanks were showing a lot of life. That just killed it.

9:57: I hate the Angels. I hate the Angels. I hate the Angels.

10:20: Yank attempting a rally again. What is happening?

10:25: Game officially over. That’s 3+ hours of my life I won’t get back.
